Did you unfriend anyone yesterday?

Written By: JoJoisms - Nov• 18•13

2PurpleThumbsDownYesterday was National Unfriend Day.  Got me thinking.  What do you unfriend people for? Making a negative comment?  Posting something of the opposite political persuasion?  Posting what they are having for dinner…27 times a day?

I dunno about you, but I have about 3000 “friends” on Facebook, some of which have NEVER talked to me–even when I comment on their walls. Since Facebook is supposed to be a social network, I usually unfriend people who haven’t ever responded to me but then PM me wanting me to buy their stuff or post their latest wares on my totally unrelated status update.  Without *real* communication there *really* is no friendship.

I love being social and talking with people online. Some of my best friends are people I’ve never met…in real life.  LOL  But I don’t see the point in having “friends” I don’t ever *really* talk to.  How about you?

I am with you all the way! I have people on my friend list who never interact with me, too and a few of them are family! I do have some friends who rarely get on facebook, I have no issues with that at all. What I do have a problem with is when you see them interacting with other people (family)and ignoring me when I ask a direct question or comment on their things. I admit, some family members I have cleared off my list. Some I know would cause issues so I keep them. But I put them on a restricted list. This way they are there, and can see the majority of my posts, but not all of it. I know they are just being nosy and this limits their viewing. I too, have a couple of handful friends on my list I’ve never met in person, either – you are one of them! But I enjoy getting to know you from a distance and consider you a great cyber buddy!

Aww…thanks Dawn. I value your friendship as well. I haven’t restricted anyone. I either accept the friendship or I don’t. I also don’t have followers for that same reason. I understand that people are busy and need to prioritize their time so not interacting doesn’t necessarily bother me. It’s being active, but not responding to ME as you said, even with direct comments/questions and/or wanting something from me but refusing to interact. I also have to keep in mind that Facebook doesn’t show all my posts to all my friends just as they don’t show all my posts to all my fans on my fan pages.

  3. It’s funny, I didn’t know it was the “national day to do so”, but I was going to… I chose to unfollow for the moment and give her one more chance… I have
“unfriended” people who use foul language in their posts, or are always too aggressive or post vulgar things or pictures, or they have beliefs too different than mine, sometimes it’s something as simple as the wrong “meme”. My parents always told me to be careful of who I hung out with, I took their advice even to today and FB 🙂

I didn’t know it was national unfriend day but I wouldn’t have observed it anyway. I have unfriended people in the past several times, but not without giving it careful consideration. A few of my ex-friends were long distance relatives who insisted upon using foul language or bringing up painful memories of ancient family conflicts that were better forgotten. The others were people I really didn’t know, but a friend suggested them. Some of these perfect strangers asked me for money and others made me uncomfortable with angry, prejudiced or seductive posts. I don’t feel that I owe these people anything. It pays to be very cautious on Facebook.
