I was a teenage telephone (book) operator

Many years ago, when I was just a teenage elf, I had an old Datson 710 with bucket seats.  In those days, cars didn’t have power seats, let alone, any way to make the seats go up far enough for a person of limited stature to be able to see over the steering wheel.

Family members suggested I sit atop a pillow, but one could not be located that was tall enough (when sat upon) to do the job so an object was found that worked quite well…for a while.

In order to stretch my child-sized body over the steering wheel to see the road ahead, I sat on…a telephone book!  There, I said it.  I sat on a telephone book to drive my first car, a 1974 Datson 710, with the paint peeling off so it looked like an old man with no hair.

It was rather slippery so I took the top cover page off and I was content to drive around town back and forth to my high school until…

One day I was driving along, minding my own car business, when I suddenly found myself looking through the steering wheel instead of above it.  I had all but determined that I must have shrunk when I decided to look at my unusual booster seat and found that I was on the Ms!

My younger brother confessed that, in his mischievous glory, he had been tearing out the pages-a few a time wondering when I’d notice.

I did get the last laugh, though.  I get to tell this story for the rest of my life.  Are you laughing?  Thank you.  Got another one!
